Unlike traditional font changes that swap out entire characters, text decorations on this page use Unicode combining diacritical marks. These are invisible-width characters that attach to the preceding character, adding visual elements such as lines, dots, or symbols above, through, or below each letter. The strikethrough effect, for instance, uses the combining long stroke overlay (U+0336) appended after each character. Because these marks are part of the Unicode standard, the decorated text can be pasted into any text field without losing its formatting.
Our generator provides several distinct strikethrough styles. The classic Strikethrough draws a horizontal line through the center of each character. Tilde Strike uses a wavy line for a more casual or playful crossed-out effect. Slash-Through diagonals across each letter suggest deletion or correction. These variations let you choose the right tone: a straight strikethrough for formal corrections, a tilde strike for humorous redactions, or a slash for dramatic emphasis on what has been removed.
Beyond strikethrough, our lines category includes underline and double underline marks for traditional emphasis, overlines for a distinctive top-edge decoration, and a wide variety of above-character marks like dots, tildes, arrows, circumflexes, and breves. Each mark adds a different visual texture to your text. Seagull places a caron above each character, Thunder adds a ring, and Stinky creates a diaeresis effect. These subtle differences let you fine-tune the look of your decorated text.
Some of the most striking effects come from stacking multiple combining marks. Strikethrough plus Underline creates heavily decorated text that looks redacted and annotated simultaneously. Overline plus Strikethrough sandwiches each character between two horizontal lines. Tilde plus Underline pairs wavy tops with solid bottoms. These compound styles are particularly useful for creating visual emphasis that stands out even in text-heavy environments like social media comment sections or forum threads.
Strikethrough text is commonly used to indicate corrections, show completed items in a to-do list, or add humorous redactions where you pretend to cross out what you really think. Underlined text can mimic hyperlink styling in contexts where actual links are not available. Overlined text works well for mathematical notation or as a visual separator in creative writing. Combining these effects with other font styles from Font Style can produce layered typography effects that elevate your digital communication from ordinary to memorable.
